Menopause: You're Not Alone, and You Don't Have to Go Through It Alone
Menopause is something every woman will go through, yet it's still not talked about as openly as it should be. Maybe you're noticing the first changes, maybe you're right in the middle of it, or maybe it's years behind you but you remember how isolating it felt. Whatever stage you're at, your experience matters.
At Healthy U Ladies Gym, we want to be a space where you feel understood, supported and never judged. This October, we're bringing you some simple, welcoming ways to look after yourself through this stage of life.
What is menopause?
Menopause is the point at which you've had no periods for 12 months in a row. In the UK, the average age is around 51, but it can happen earlier or later. The years leading up to it are called perimenopause. This is when many women first notice changes, sometimes up to ten years beforehand, and it can be confusing if you don't realise what's going on.
Because hormone levels shift during this time, symptoms can show up in all sorts of ways, and no two women have exactly the same experience.
Common symptoms

Some of the things women often tell us about include:
Hot flushes and night sweats
Trouble sleeping, or waking in the early hours
Low mood, anxiety or feeling more irritable than usual
Brain fog, forgetfulness and difficulty concentrating
Aching joints and muscle stiffness
Tiredness and dips in energy
Changes in confidence and how you feel about your body
Some women barely notice the transition, while others find it hugely disruptive. Both are completely normal. If your symptoms are affecting your day-to-day life, please speak to your GP. There is support available, and you don't have to simply "put up with it".
Why movement matters
Exercise isn't a cure for menopause, but it can be a powerful part of looking after yourself. Staying active can help to:
Support your mood. Movement can ease stress and lift your spirits.
Improve your sleep. Regular activity often helps people sleep more soundly.
Protect your bones and muscles. Oestrogen levels fall during menopause, which can affect bone density and muscle mass. Strength and resistance training are especially valuable at this stage.
Boost your energy. It may feel counterintuitive when you're tired, but a little movement often gives energy back.
Release tension. Many of us hold stress in our shoulders, neck and back without realising.
The best exercise is the kind you'll actually enjoy and keep doing. On some days, that might be a strength session. On others, it might be a gentle stretch. Both count.
Look after the whole you
Menopause isn't only physical. It can affect how you think, feel and see yourself. Alongside movement, small habits can make a real difference:
Talk about it. Chat with friends, family or colleagues. You'll often find other women have been through the same thing.
Make rest a priority. A wind-down routine and a cool, dark bedroom can help with sleep.
Eat well and stay hydrated. Plenty of protein, fibre, calcium-rich foods and water supports your body through the changes.
Be kind to yourself. Some days will be harder than others, and that's okay.
💜 Menopause Mondays
Every Monday in October | 9:00–9:15am
Faith and Nic will alternate leading our Monday morning stretch sessions. These gentle sessions are your opportunity to:
De-stress and calm your mind
Release tension
Reconnect with your body
Give yourself 15 minutes to pause and start your week feeling supported. There's no pressure and no experience needed. Just come as you are.

💜 Menopause Awareness Day: Sunday 18th October

To mark Menopause Awareness Day, join Julia for a yin yoga class from 10:00 to 10:40am. Yin yoga is slow, restorative and deeply calming. Poses are held for longer, giving your body and mind time to soften and settle. It's a lovely way to ease tension and give yourself some well-earned stillness.
Spaces are limited, so please book early to avoid missing out.
A space where you belong
You don't need to be an expert, have a certain level of fitness, or have it all figured out. At Healthy U, you'll find a women-only space, friendly faces and a community that understands.
